A CONVERSATION WITH BRENT GREEN

Evans & Green Celebrate 21 Years as Pioneers of Creditors’ Rights

Twenty-one years ago the then-titled Greater Springfield Business Journal highlighted local law firm Evans & Green LLP as being the first in Missouri to receive certification as creditors’ rights specialists.  Attorneys Doug Evans and Brent D. Green are now celebrating their 21st year with that designation, making them some of the most experienced creditors’ rights attorneys in the United States.

“We were cutting edge at the time,” said Green in reference to their initial 1993 certification by what is now the American Board of Certification.  At the time Evans and Green were among the first 40 attorneys nationwide to receive creditors’ rights certification and embarked on a path that has, twenty-one years later, sharpened their edge even further.

“Our longevity has tested us; we can take harder cases than most and it is unlikely we will encounter a situation we are not familiar with,” said Evans, who is currently serving on the Board of Directors of the American Board of Certification.

“We provide stability, dependability and consistency,” says Green.  “We are often already familiar with a debtor, and that can help our client understand the most efficient way to move forward with collecting the debt.”

Evans also points out that having been involved in a niche of the legal profession for so long has given them insight into the practices of attorneys nationwide.  “We can refer clients to out of state attorneys with confidence,” he said.

Evans & Green LLP’s practice includes debt collection, commercial litigation, representation of creditors in bankruptcy court.  Included in their practice is the unique ability to represent creditors even if the debtor has filed bankruptcy.

Evans and Green are both graduates of Missouri State University and the University of Missouri at Columbia School of Law.  They formed their partnership in 1990, cover 22 counties in Southwest Missouri and are linked to similar law firms nationwide.

Brent D. Green & Douglas S. Evans named Missouri “Super Lawyers” for 2014

Brent D. Green and Douglas S. Evans have been continuously recognized as Super Lawyers since 2008.  To be a Super Lawyer an attorney must go through a rigorous proceeding.  The selection process involves ballots being mailed to thousands of lawyers in the state who have been in practice for five years or more.  Each nomination carries a point value; lawyers cannot vote for themselves.  An independent candidate search is also involved by reviewing national/local periodicals, online searches, and meetings with law firms.  The next step is evaluating the candidates for verdicts, experience, honors, professional activity, lectures and various other factors.  An attorney must attain a high degree of peer recognition and professional achievement.  After dividing attorneys into groups based on the size of their firms, the candidates with the highest points in each group are selected.  Only five percent of lawyers in Missouri are selected as Super Lawyers.

Douglas S. Evans re-elected to Board of Directors of The American Board of Certification

Evans & Green LLP partner Doug Evans has been elected to another three year term to the Board of Directors of The American Board of Certification, the organization responsible for certification of creditors’ rights and business and consumer bankruptcy attorneys nationwide.

The American Board of Certification is a non-profit organization dedicated to serving the public and improving the quality of bankruptcy and creditors’ rights law.  It has certified nearly 1,000 attorneys in consumer and business bankruptcy and creditors’ rights law nationwide.  Certification serves the public by allowing potential clients to make an informed decision in choosing bankruptcy and creditors’ rights counsel.  In addition, certification encourages attorneys to strive toward excellence and recognizes those attorneys who have met rigorous standards.  The American Board of Certification offers separate certification programs in business bankruptcy, consumer bankruptcy, and creditors’ rights law.

It is sponsored by the American Bankruptcy Institute and the Commercial Law League of America.  All three certification programs are accredited by the American Bar Association and several states have accredited the programs.  Its Board of Directors consists of many of the nation’s finest bankruptcy and creditors rights professionals.
